The Failure of Stochastic Failure: Why LLMs are Catastrophic in a Refinery For years, the promise of Artificial Intelligence in industry has been tethered to the advancements of the consumer-facing digital world: large language models (LLMs) and deep learning networks trained on billions of data points. Yet, every plant manager, control engineer, and CTO knows a fundamental, unstated truth: The physical world is not a language model. The core mechanism of traditional AI is stochastic failure—a fancy term for guessing. In a chat window, a "hallucination" is an annoying novelty. In a $5 billion refinery, a power grid, or an automated manufacturing line, it is a catastrophic, multi-million-dollar event.
